# Storm Season and Appliance Control Boards

The board that fails in September on an appliance that behaved all winter is the regional pattern. Here is why cumulative transients do more damage than one strike.

Northeast Florida sees roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year. That number is the
useful one, and it explains a failure pattern we see across all four First Coast
counties every late summer: an appliance that worked faultlessly through the
winter loses its display, its relay control or its ability to start a program in
August or September.

The common assumption is that something was struck. Almost never. A direct
strike destroys obviously and usually takes several things with it. What
actually happens here is slower and much harder to see.

## What a transient is, and why repetition matters

A nearby strike, a utility switching event, or a large motor starting on the
same service produces a brief overvoltage on the line — microseconds to
milliseconds, well above nominal. Appliance power supplies are built with some
tolerance for this, and a single event usually passes without consequence.

The damage is cumulative. Each event stresses the same components: the
metal-oxide varistor across the input, the electrolytic capacitors in the
low-voltage supply, the solder joints under a relay that has been hammered. A
varistor degrades a little every time it clamps, and it degrades silently — there
is no indicator, and the appliance behaves normally right up until the protection
is no longer there.

Over a season with 68 storm days, the count adds up. The board that fails in
September is not failing because of the storm that week. It is failing because of
the sixty before it.

## How it presents

The early signs are behavioural rather than terminal, which is why they get
dismissed:

- A program that will not start, then starts fine the next morning
- A display that resets or blanks briefly with no power interruption in the house
- A hood with working lights and a dead fan
- An oven that ignores one function while everything else works
- An appliance that trips the breaker only occasionally
- Several appliances behaving oddly in the same week

That last one is the diagnostic tell. Appliances do not coordinate. If the range,
the dishwasher and the hood all develop personality in the same seven days, the
common factor is the supply, not three simultaneous failures.

## Why built-in kitchens are more exposed

A kitchen specified around built-in and professional equipment has far more
electronics in it than a kitchen of freestanding appliances — an induction
cooktop with inverter boards, wall ovens with their own controls, a refrigerator
column, a dishwasher, a downdraft or hood control, sometimes a coffee system and
a wine cabinet. Each is an independent target. The more boards on the circuit,
the more likely one of them shows the damage first.

There is a second regional factor on the barrier islands. A board in a
salt-laden, humid environment on 32082, 32250, 32266, 32233 or Amelia Island
starts with less margin, because corrosion at the connectors and solder joints
raises resistance before any transient arrives.

## What actually reduces the risk

**Whole-house surge protection at the panel.** This is the measure that changes
the odds. It clamps at the service entrance, before the energy reaches anything
downstream, and it protects hard-wired appliances a plug-in strip cannot help.
It is electrician work, not appliance work, but it is the recommendation we make
most often on this subject.

**Point-of-use protection where there is a plug.** Useful as a second layer for
anything cord-connected. It does nothing for a hard-wired cooktop or oven.

**Replace protection that has done its job.** A surge device that has absorbed
years of events is not necessarily still working. Devices with a status
indicator exist for exactly this reason.

**In the historic belt, check the panel first.** Riverside, Avondale, Old
Ortega, San Marco and Old Mandarin kitchens frequently run on wiring that was
extended rather than designed, and rarely have a dedicated 20-amp circuit for
the kitchen at all. A marginal circuit does not cause transient damage, but it
makes every other electrical symptom harder to read, and it is worth resolving
before chasing an intermittent appliance fault.

## When you call

Tell us the pattern, not just the symptom. "It stopped working" and "it stops
working after a storm and is fine the next day" lead to two different visits.
The second one tells us to bring diagnostic gear for the supply as well as for
the appliance, and it is frequently the difference between one visit and two.
