# How a Built-In Ice Maker Fails, and in What Order

Small cubes, a mold that fills at one end, a frozen fill tube. Three complaints, one sequence, and the order that separates a cheap fix from an expensive one.

An ice maker is the only mechanism in a refrigerator with a continuous water
connection and a moving harvest cycle, and it is the component we are called out
for more than any other. Almost all of those calls describe one of three things:
cubes that are too small or hollow, a mold that fills at one end only, or a fill
tube frozen solid.

Those are not three faults. They are three points on the same sequence, and
knowing where you are on it is most of the diagnosis.

## The one design fact that explains the rest

**A built-in ice maker meters by time, not by volume.**

The fill valve is a solenoid with a small orifice. The control opens it for a
fixed number of seconds and then closes it. Nothing counts what actually
arrived. There is no flow meter, no level sensor in the mold, and no feedback of
any kind confirming that the fill was correct.

Every consequence below follows from that. Anything that restricts the orifice —
deposit, a fragment of debris from a line that was cut during installation, a
valve that is not opening fully because its coil is weak — delivers less water
in the same number of seconds. The appliance does not know and cannot report it.
It simply makes smaller ice.

## Stage one: the cubes get smaller

This is the stage nobody calls about, and it is the cheapest one to fix.

Cubes come out undersized, hollow in the middle, or cloudy. The mold fills at
the end nearest the inlet and tapers off. Nothing has failed in the sense of
stopping, and there is no error on the display, so most owners adjust to it —
they run the machine more, or buy bags in summer, and the underlying restriction
goes on narrowing.

If the appliance is caught here, the work is usually the valve, the inlet path
and a fill-volume adjustment. It is an hour, not an afternoon.

## Stage two: harvest and fill drift apart

Ice releases from the mold because a heater briefly warms the interface until a
thin layer melts. That harvest heater runs for a set time too.

When the mold is holding less water than it was designed to, the two timings
stop matching. A short fill freezes faster than the control expects, so harvest
begins earlier than it should relative to the state of the ice. A mold that
releases slowly holds the cycle longer than the control allows for. Either way
the machine's rhythm drifts, and production falls off in a way that owners
describe as the unit "not keeping up".

At this stage a second candidate enters: the mold surface itself. Ice releases
cleanly from a smooth surface and reluctantly from a rough one, so anything
accumulating on the mold makes the harvest heater work longer for the same
result and stretches every cycle.

## Stage three: the fill tube freezes

This is the call we actually receive.

Once fill and harvest are far enough out of step, water arrives while the
previous batch is still releasing. Some of it sits in the fill tube instead of
reaching the mold, and it freezes there. Now the next fill cannot get in at all,
and the machine either stops producing or produces a fused mass in the bin.

Clearing the tube gets ice out of it for a few days. It does not address why the
timing drifted, which is why an ice maker "fixed" this way is usually back
within a fortnight. The fix is upstream, at stage one.

## What water has to do with it

Some of what narrows a fill orifice and roughens a mold arrives dissolved in the
water, and the First Coast is not uniform in that respect — several different
utilities serve the four counties we cover, and what comes out of a tap in one
of them is not what comes out in another. It is one input among several rather
than the whole explanation, so we look at the state of the mold and the fill cup
on the first visit instead of assuming either way.

## The order we check in

1. **Look at the mold and the fill cup.** Free, immediate, and it splits the
 diagnosis in two. A film on the mold fingers or a crust around the fill cup
 points one way; a clean mold producing full-size clear cubes points at the
 control side instead.
2. **Fill volume.** Measured against what the mold should be holding, not
 estimated from cube size.
3. **The inlet path.** Valve, screen, and the line back to the shutoff — a
 partly closed valve behind the cabinet is a real and frequent finding.
4. **Harvest.** Heater, thermistor and the timing of the cycle relative to fill.
5. **Airflow and compartment temperature.** An ice maker in a compartment that
 is not holding its own temperature is a symptom of the refrigerator, not a
 fault in the ice maker. This is why run time and condenser condition get
 checked before anyone orders an ice-maker part.
6. **The control board, last.** It is the most expensive item on the list and
 the one most often blamed for the five above it.

## What you can establish before calling

Pull the bin out and look. Photograph the mold, the fill cup and a handful of
the ice. Note whether the unit still cycles off in mild weather — if it does
not, the ice complaint may be downstream of a condenser problem, and that
changes what needs to travel to the address.

Then have the model and serial number ready. Ice-maker assemblies and fill
valves are ordered against the serial number rather than the model, because the
same appliance built two years apart does not always take the same part. Having
it at the booking is the difference between a part arriving on the van and a
part arriving next week.

## When it is not worth repairing

Standalone ice machines and older ice makers inside built-in refrigeration
occasionally reach a point where the assembly, the valve and the harvest
components together approach the value of replacing the unit. Where that is the
case we put it on the written estimate as a number rather than as advice, before
any part is ordered, so the choice is yours and it is made with the figure in
front of you.
